Screen & Recoat Hardwood Floors – FAQ
What is a screen and recoat?
A screen and recoat (also called buff and coat) is a maintenance process that refreshes your hardwood floors. We lightly abrade the existing finish and apply a new protective topcoat—restoring shine and extending the life of your floors without sanding down to bare wood.
How is screen and recoat different from full refinishing?
Screen and recoat only treats the top layer of finish, while full refinishing sands the wood down completely. If your floors have deep scratches, stains, or bare wood, full refinishing may be necessary. For light wear and dullness, screen and recoat is the faster and more affordable option.
How do I know if my floors are a good candidate?
Your floors are a good fit if they:
-
Have light scratches or dullness
-
Still have a consistent finish (no exposed wood)
-
Don’t have deep gouges or heavy damage
If you’re unsure, we can inspect your floors and recommend the best option.
How long does the process take?
Most screen and recoat jobs are completed in one day, depending on the size of the space. Floors are typically walkable within a few hours.
How long before I can walk on my floors?
-
Light foot traffic: 4–6 hours
-
Normal use: 24 hours
-
Furniture replacement: 24–48 hours
-
Rugs: Wait 5–7 days for proper curing
Will there be dust or strong odors?
There is very minimal dust since no heavy sanding is involved. Odor depends on the finish:
-
Water-based finishes: low odor
Can all hardwood floors be screened and recoated?
Not always. This process may not work if:
-
Wax or oil-based cleaners have been used (can prevent adhesion)
-
The finish is peeling or worn through to bare wood
-
Floors have been previously treated with incompatible coatings
We’ll test and verify before starting.
What types of finishes can you apply?
We offer:
-
Water-based polyurethane (fast-drying, clear finish)
-
Multiple sheen levels: matte, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss
Do I need to move furniture before service?
Yes, the space should be cleared of furniture and rugs before we arrive. If needed, ask about assistance options.
How much does screen and recoat cost?
Pricing depends on square footage, floor condition, and finish type. Contact us for a free estimate tailored to your home.
Do you offer screen and recoat services in my area?
